Service Description

Give yourself the tools necessary to connect with others by developing a foundational knowledge of French. Join this intensive 2/week, 8 week program. "Bonjour et Bienvenue !" is a level A1.1 course book offering a gentle introduction into the French language. To further support the learning process, we will be using the bilingual edition of the book, providing instructions and contrastive grammar lessons in English. Unlike other textbooks, this tailor-made collection of 8 short lessons is adapted to take into account anglophone learners' difficulties, with a gradual progression towards understanding and assimilating the basics of the French language. Moreover, this course takes an intercultural approach so that students become familiar with French habits and behaviour. A hard copy or a digital copy of the textbook will be provided to all new students at no additional cost. When you make your choice, please note that the paper version will require a MP3 CD reader whereas the digital version has the audio recordings integrated directly into the software. Additional interactive exercises are available online together with access to video support for French pronunciation. What will be covered: Communication: introducing yourself; talking about identity; following instructions; expressing likes and dislikes; asking/giving directions; talking about food; shopping; etc. Vocabulary: greetings; numbers; days of the week, months of the year; question words; nationalities; professions; leisure and sports; city landmarks; food items, meals, and drinks; clothes and accessories; etc. Grammar: distinguishing tu and vous; understanding different kinds of articles ; knowing the masculine and feminine forms of nouns and adjectives; using different kinds of question structures; using the negative sentence form; focusing on a selection of verbs from the 3 verb groups; knowing prepositions of place; using the conditional to express politeness; etc. Phonetics: a general introduction to vowel sounds; the French /R/ and other consonants; nasal vowels vs. oral vowels; liaisons, word linking and elision.
